The Spokesman-Review Fishing Report May 24, 2013

The Spokesman-Review Fishing Report By Alan Liere May 24, 2013

Fly fishing

Amber Lake is still a good bet for cutthroat running 18 inches and up. Try leech patterns close to the bottom.

The North Fork Coeur d’Alene is dropping, though the fast water makes wading tough. Fishing has been good for anglers tossing big stonefly patterns with a dropper. Afternoons are best.

The St. Joe is dropping but still too high for good fishing and the Clark Fork is a few weeks away. Fly fishermen would do better to concentrate on the small lakes – Fan, Sacheen and Fish in Washington and Hayden, Hauser and Fernan in Idaho. The exception would be the bays in Lake Coeur d’ Alene, where bass and pike are in the shallows.

Boating Accident Kills One Person On Sprague Lake

AP/KHQ6 News report on boating accident accident at Sprague Lake, WA.

It can happen to anyone...especially if one does not use good sense and safe boating practices.  We have been on Sprague Lake, Lake Roosevelt and Deer Lake  when the wind came up and it ain't pretty.  Rock Lake is notorious for wind causing very rough water.  We have been to Rock Lake several times when we didn't launch because of rough conditions.  At Keller Ferry/Lake Roosevelt last year on July 3rd the wind came up and we were plowing through three foot + waves to get back to shore in a heavy 19 foot fiberglass inboard boat with waves breaking over the bow...the pucker factor was rather high...an almost certain disaster in a small, light boat.

I love to fish BUT it just isn't worth the risk when conditions are potentially unsafe.  The object is to have an enjoyable day and get back home safe to sleep in one's own bed and not a hospital bed...or stretched out on a mortuary slab.

Fly fishing

The best river option for fly fishermen right now is the Coeur d’Alene, which is dropping and should be in decent shape by Saturday. Finding clean, slow water is the ticket.

There is a lot of bug activity on Sprague Lake and enough 4-pound rainbow to make things very interesting. Evenings have been good.

The Fishin' Magician Fishing Report May 17, 2013

The Fishin' Magician Report By Dave Graybill May 17, 2013

The Quincy Valley Tourism Association’s annual Pikeminnow Derby kicks off this weekend, and if you haven’t registered for the event you still have time. Registrations will be taken at the Crescent Bar Derby Headquarters until 5:30 today. This popular event not only offers a weekend of fishing fun on the Columbia River, there are two boats being raffled and over $9,000.00 worth of cash and prizes awarded to those who participate. It also serves another important purpose. It will help remove hundreds of northern pikeminnows from the Columbia River, and they are a primary predator of salmon and steelhead smolt making their way down the river to the ocean. Anglers not only experience the fun of fishing, they get a chance to win some cash and prizes and really help out our fisheries. Everybody wins with this one. I want to remind folks that there some great fishing events for kids coming up soon. One is the annual Fishing Kids event at the National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth. To register for the events just click on the Pepsi logo on my web site and follow the links. Don’t miss this one!
